Kirsty’s Personal Statement 2014

I started using oil paint at art school in Aberdeen nearly 30 years ago – and it was an absolute revelation! The smell, consistency, texture, richness of colour; I loved everything about it. I still feel exactly the same, maybe more so.

Generally working without references, but with a strong initial idea of subject and composition, the painting can quickly take on it’s own direction. it seems the actual working process can be virtually subconscious, allowing the picture-making process to be an intuitive and inventive. The surface of the painting has a life of its own,the subject matter can be secondary and the painting develops through a variety of layers and marks, light, shade and colour.

Recently I have been introducing new elements to the still life paintings. Lemons, oranges, tomatoes and pears are sitting alongside flowers and vases, creating different compositions and perspective, alongside the zinging colours. The new paintings also have more texture, the layers of paint building up thickly in places to emphasize different areas of the canvas.

Regular travel is always an inspiration, and never more so than when on home turf – my landscapes have always been rooted in Scotland. The light and drama is refreshed in my mind with each visit. There are rumbustuous groups of trees appearing in the paintings, and even suggestions of buildings. The landscapes seem to combine the lush colour and wild nature of Scotland with the rolling South Downs of Sussex where I now live.
